A foundation for new permanent makeup artists
This fundamentals course is designed for people beginning their permanent makeup education, including beauty professionals who want structured training in cosmetic tattooing. You will learn how to evaluate a client, plan a suitable design and approach each procedure with care.
Our trainers’ main priority is helping you truly learn. Their time and attention during class are dedicated to the students, with individual guidance to help you understand the techniques, practice them carefully and build confidence in your skills by the end of the course.
What will you learn?
Build a strong foundation in permanent makeup through theory, design practice and supervised hands-on training:
• Powder brows and shading: Brow mapping, shaping and shading for softly defined eyebrows.
• Microblading and hair-stroke design: Creating individual hair-like strokes with attention to shape, placement and balance.
• Lips: Lip mapping, lip liner and lip color, including pigment selection and application.
• Eyeliner: Design, placement and application, with an emphasis on safety.
• Scalp micropigmentation: Foundational scalp design and pigment-placement techniques.
You’ll also study skin anatomy, color theory, pigment selection, equipment, sanitation, infection prevention, consultation, contraindications, healing, aftercare and Virginia regulations.
Practice progresses from paper and latex to mannequin work and supervised live-model procedures, with dedicated instructor guidance throughout.
How the training is structured
The 200-hour program combines 100 hours of theory with 100 hours of supervised practical instruction.

Practical training progresses from paper mapping and design to latex practice, mannequin simulations and supervised live-model procedures. Required online modules must be completed before live-model work.
Hands-on practice with individual feedback
You will practice the steps involved in planning and carrying out a procedure, including consultation, preparation, mapping, pigment selection, machine control and aftercare. Instructors evaluate your work and guide your progression from simulation to live models.
The academy provides one guaranteed model per treatment area for supervised practice. Scalp micropigmentation is practiced on a mannequin.
All live-model procedures are performed in person under direct instructor supervision. Practical performances and instructional hours are documented throughout the program.
Program completion, licensing and tuition
To complete the course, students must finish the required instructional hours and online modules, meet the program’s documented performance requirements and demonstrate competency through written and practical evaluations.
Course completion and practitioner licensing are separate steps. Virginia requires applicants to pass the board-approved examination and complete the licensing process. A school certificate does not itself authorize independent professional practice. Requirements may differ if you plan to work outside Virginia.

What do I need before enrolling?

Will completing the course give me a Virginia license?
No. Completing the course is an educational step. Applicants must also pass the board-approved examination and satisfy the licensing requirements. Confirm the current application process directly with DPOR.
