Nanobrows vs. Microblading: Technique, Healing and Cost
Nano brows use a permanent makeup machine and fine needle to create hair-like strokes. Microblading uses a manual tool with a row of fine needles to make small incisions and deposit pigment. Both are forms of cosmetic tattooing. The best choice depends on your skin, existing pigment, preferred look and the artist’s healed results.

How nano brows and microblading work
Microblading: manual hair strokes
The artist guides a small hand tool to create individual strokes. Pressure, depth, stroke placement and the condition of the skin all influence how the brows heal. Ask to see healed work on skin similar to yours, rather than judging only freshly finished photos.
Nano brows: machine hair strokes
With Nanobrows, a motorized needle repeatedly enters the skin while the artist builds each stroke. The machine provides the needle motion; the artist still controls placement, pressure and working depth. Nano brows puncture the skin, so they are not a non-invasive treatment.
Key differences at a glance
Tool: microblading uses a hand tool; nano brows use a machine with a fine needle configuration.
Appearance: both aim for individual hair strokes. Design and healed pigment retention matter more than the treatment name alone.
Healing: either method can cause tenderness, redness and flaking. A machine does not guarantee faster healing or fewer complications.
Skin suitability: oil production, pores, texture, scarring and previous tattooing affect whether fine strokes will remain distinct.
Maintenance: both can fade or soften. More pigment is not always the right answer when old work needs refreshing.
Which is better for oily or mature skin?
There is no single best technique for every skin type. Very oily or porous skin may soften hair strokes with either method. Mature, delicate, sun-damaged or scarred skin also needs an individual assessment. Ask whether soft shading would give you a more predictable look.
Our Powder Brows vs. Nano Brows guide explains how a shaded brow differs from hair strokes. Combination brows bring the two effects together when that suits the design.
How long do nano brows last?
Synergy Beauty’s general guide is approximately one to three years, with gradual fading and softening. That is an estimate, not a promise that strokes will stay unchanged or disappear completely. Results depend on the skin, application, pigment, sun exposure and aftercare; the technique name alone cannot predict which brows will last longer.

Healing, aftercare and safety
Plan for a healing period with either technique and follow the written aftercare provided for your appointment. Avoid picking flakes or adding products your artist has not recommended. Ask how to plan makeup, exercise and swimming around your healing, especially before a trip or event.
Both methods carry tattoo-related risks, including infection, allergic reactions and scarring. The FDA’s permanent makeup fact sheet explains these risks and why removal can be difficult. A consultation should address your skin history, medications, allergies and previous procedures.
Can nano brows go over old microblading?
Sometimes. Light, well-positioned old work may fit a new design. Dense pigment, an unsuitable shape or a gray, blue, red or uneven result may require a different plan before more pigment is added.

Frequently asked questions
Is nanoblading the same as nano brows?
The names can be used inconsistently. Ask whether the artist uses a manual hand tool or a permanent makeup machine. At Synergy Beauty, Nanobrows means machine-created hair strokes.
Which lasts longer, nano brows or microblading?
There is no guaranteed winner for every client. Nano brows commonly last about one to three years before a refresh may be desired, but fading and softening vary. Skin, technique, pigment, sun exposure and aftercare all affect the result.
Are nano brows better for oily skin?
They may be an option, but very oily skin and large pores can make fine strokes less distinct. Your consultation should compare healed hair-stroke results with powder or combination brows.
Can nano brows cover old microblading?
Sometimes, after assessment. Existing pigment must be light enough and positioned appropriately for the new design. Dark, blurred or misplaced work may need correction or removal first.
Do nano brows hurt less than microblading?
Sensitivity varies, and discomfort is possible with either technique. Both break the skin. Discuss comfort measures and your medical history before treatment rather than choosing based on a promise of less pain.
